Smart Networks for Urban Participation

what is being researched?

The research project „Smart Networks for Urban Participation (SANE)“ of the University of Hamburg and HAW Hamburg opens up new opportunities for citizen participation. In a network-based, decentralized information space, citizens and institutions can provide, disseminate, analyse and use data.

Data security and privacy are preserved as an important prerequisite for acceptance and participation in online exchange.

Head: Prof. Dr. Mathias Fischer, University of Hamburg

The company’s own solar cells and an integrated eco-energy management system for the RIOT operating system used make time-consuming cable laying and battery changes unnecessary.
In addition to the collected environmental data, we have already been able to gather important information on the LoRa coverage* in Hamburg.

*free W-LAN in public transport

Since August 2019, one of the SANE sensors has been driving on a local bus through Hamburg.
The electrically driven bus carries the sensor emission-free through the traffic, while e.g. the fine dust pollution from other vehicles is measured directly in the flowing traffic. The special feature:
The sensor also relies on green energy and can therefore be operated completely autonomously and permanently.
