Cyber physical systems (CPS) and smart systems consist of mechanical components, software and modern information technology.
By linking the individual components via networks, complex infrastructures can be controlled, regulated and monitored.
CPS are used in many different application areas. For example, in logistics, industrial production and environmental technology, in medical technology, in defence technology or in traffic engineering. The areas of application often coincide with those of Industry 4.0. The aim of the systems is to ensure higher efficiency, lower costs and faster processing of complex procedures.

The research project „Smart Networks for Citizen Participation (SANE)“ of the University of Hamburg and HAW Hamburg opens up new opportunities for citizen participation. In a network-based, decentralized information space, citizens and institutions can provide, disseminate, analyze and use data. Data security and privacy are preserved as important prerequisites for acceptance and participation in online interaction.
